Are the teachers at AES Native English Speakers? 

Yes, all our teachers are all very carefully selected for their ability to teach interesting and varied lessons according to the type of class they will teach. They take time to prepare classes that meet the requirements of the students, and they pay attention to all our students’ progress.  All classes are observed on a regular basis by the Director of Studies

When can I start classes?

Please check a start dates for each course. If there is a Bank Holiday on Monday, classes will start the following day.

How many students will there be in my class?

The maximum number of students in each class is 15; there are smaller classes, depending on the type of course and the time of day, and sometimes the season in which the course is offered. Executive Business English and special topic classes are smaller than the General English or Business Course.

When is the School closed?

The school is closed for bank holidays (usually 8 every year) and during the last week of December and the first 2 weeks of January.

Are other classes available?

Yes. The School offers special summer sessions, Business English, and special topic English Language courses (for example, Executive Business English, English for Travel & Tourism, English for Hotel & Catering, English for International Banking, English for Lawyers, Medical & Pharmaceutical English). All of these courses are available when there is sufficient student interest and advance enrolment. These classes are in small groups of four to six students and include: exam practice; conversation; grammar; composition and writing skills.

Are there any breaks?

Yes there are two breaks: A morning break of 15 minutes from 10.00 – 10.15am and from 11.45 to 12.00. A lunch break of 45 minutes from 12.30 - 1.15pm

Can I prepare for exams at AES?

Yes, you can (see Exam courses for details).

Is it necessary to buy books?

Only on Specialist Courses.  You can order books if you wish from the school's office at break times or after classes. The cost per book is around £20.00 each. We also suggest you bring a bilingual dictionary to class.

Is there an activities programme at AES?

Yes. AES has a very exciting leisure programme for its students. Most activities involve a small cost but they are a fun way to meet new friends, find out more about England and practise English. A member of staff supervises all leisure programme events.

Is there a student welfare programme?

Yes. We have a Welfare Officer whose job it is to help you with any personal problems you may have.

What do I do when I come to school?

First, you must come to the office at around 8.50am on your first day: Then you will do a written test. This takes about 60-90 minutes. Then we can allocate you to a class of your level. We will also give you a student card.

What if my class is too easy or too difficult?

If your class seems either too easy or too difficult for you, please speak to your teacher.  If after speaking to your teacher you feel that nothing has been done about it then speak to the Director of Studies.  Do not worry, it is important for you to tell us if there are any problems with your class so that we can help you.

What levels of English can I study?

Students are placed into one of the following classes after they take their test at the school: Beginners, Elementary, Lower Intermediate, Intermediate, Upper Intermediate, Advanced or Proficiency.

What study times are there?

This will depend on which type of course you are attending; usually the timetable is as follows:

15 hour per week:

Monday to Friday

1st lesson from 9.00 to 10.00

Break from 10.00 to 10.15

2nd lesson from 10.15 to 11.45

Break from 11.45 to 12.00

3rd lesson from 12.00 to 12.30

21 hours per week:

Same as above plus afternoon lessons from Monday to Thursday from 13.15 to 14.45.
